Product Packaging Design

Design packaging that reads on a shelf: exact label text, material and finish specified, hierarchy tested at arm's length and in thumbnail.

Design packaging for [PRODUCT].

Category and where it sits: [e.g. "cold brew coffee, specialty grocery shelf" / "supplement, online only"]
Brand name, exactly: [NAME]
Product name, exactly: [NAME]
Other text that must appear: [SIZE, VARIANT, TAGLINE, KEY CLAIM. Type each exactly.]
Brand personality: [THREE WORDS]
Shelf competitors: [WHAT SURROUNDS IT AND WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE]
Package format: [BOX / POUCH / BOTTLE / CAN / JAR / TUBE], size [DIMENSIONS]

Prompt:

A product packaging design for [FORMAT] of [PRODUCT], photographed straight on against a plain [COLOR] background, studio lit with soft even light and a subtle shadow beneath.

Material and finish: [e.g. "uncoated kraft paperboard with a matte finish and a single spot-gloss element", "frosted glass with a matte white label", "brushed aluminum can"]. The material texture is visible and true to that substrate.

Layout, in order of size on the pack: the brand name "[BRAND]" in [TYPE STYLE] at [POSITION], the product name "[PRODUCT NAME]" beneath it in [TYPE STYLE AND SIZE RELATIVE TO THE BRAND], [OTHER TEXT] set small at [POSITION]. Every word spelled exactly as given, with clean even letterspacing and no invented text anywhere on the pack.

Color: [2-3 NAMED COLORS] only, with [ACCENT] used once as the single point of emphasis.

Graphic element: [ONE IDEA: an illustrated motif, a bold color block, a pattern, or nothing but type]. One idea only. Packaging that says three things says none of them.

Composition: generous margins, clear separation between the name and everything else, and nothing crowding the edges.

Clean product shot only. No hands, no props, no lifestyle scene, no text outside the package, no watermark.

Then produce:
1. The same design in two alternative color directions.
2. A shelf test: the pack shown small among [4-6] competing products, so I can see whether it separates.
3. One line on what reads first at arm's length, and what survives at thumbnail size for an online listing.

How to use

Run the shelf test before falling in love with anything. Packaging is never seen in isolation, and a design that looks distinctive alone often disappears next to the four products it actually competes with. The one-idea rule is the constraint most packaging briefs violate, since every stakeholder adds a claim and the result is a pack with no hierarchy. Set the real legal text and any regulated claims by hand in a design tool; generated type is for evaluating a direction, not for print.
