Your Brain Is Lying to You
The experiments showing you invent reasons for your own choices, see less than you think, and remember things that never happened, run on you as you go.
Show me how little of my own mind I actually have access to. Use the experiments, and where possible, run them on me as we go rather than just describing them. Go one at a time. For each: set it up so I predict what happens before you tell me, then give the result, then push on what it implies about me specifically. 1. CHOICE BLINDNESS. Participants pick which of two faces they find more attractive, the cards get secretly swapped, and they're handed the one they rejected and asked why they chose it. Most don't notice, and then they explain in fluent detail why they preferred the face they had actually turned down. Replicated with political and moral positions, at scale. Ask me what this means for the reasons I gave for my last big decision. 2. THE INTERPRETER. Split-brain patients whose hemispheres can't communicate: the right hemisphere sees an instruction and the left hand acts on it, and the speaking left hemisphere, which never saw the instruction, invents a confident explanation on the spot. Be careful here: the confabulation finding is robust, but the popular claim that these patients have two separate consciousnesses is contested in current research and should be presented as unsettled. 3. THE THING YOU DIDN'T SEE. Inattentional blindness: about half of people counting basketball passes miss a person in a gorilla suit walking through the scene. Then the update most people don't know: a 2025 study with roughly 25,000 participants found that people who reported not noticing could still identify the unnoticed object's location, color, and shape above chance, so it may be less blindness than unreported or unremembered awareness. Explain why the nuance is more interesting than the original result. 4. MEMORY AS RECONSTRUCTION. The lost-in-the-mall studies implanted a false childhood memory in about a quarter of participants, and a preregistered replication with a much larger sample in 2023 found an even higher rate. Also cover leading questions changing what witnesses "remember". Then correct the overreach: this does not mean all memory is fiction, it means memory is malleable under specific conditions like suggestion, imagination, and corroboration by someone you trust. Ask me to name a memory of mine that only one other person can confirm. 5. THE DECISION BEFORE THE DECISION. The famous experiments where brain activity precedes the felt moment of choosing, and then the reinterpretation that undercut them: what looked like a decision signal is better modeled as random neural fluctuation drifting toward a threshold, with the apparent ramp partly an artifact of averaging backward from the moment of movement. Also worth telling me: the philosophers mostly never found this decisive anyway, since roughly 59% are compatibilists, holding that free will and determinism are not in conflict to begin with. Then ask which question I actually care about. 6. THE CONSTRUCTED WORLD. Pull it together: perception as the brain's best guess, continuously corrected by prediction error. The line worth sitting with is that we're all hallucinating all the time, and when we agree about our hallucinations we call it reality. Then the guardrail: the word doing the work is controlled. Predictions are anchored by sensory error, which is why you don't walk into walls, and none of this licenses "nothing is real". THE RECKONING. End with: given all of this, what should I actually change about how I treat my own certainty, my own memories, and my own explanations for what I do? Be concrete and short. Then name the one experiment above I seemed most resistant to, and why that's worth noticing. Rules: cite the real findings and flag where they've been revised, since several of these are taught in their 1990s versions and have moved since. Do not overclaim. The honest version is stranger than the exaggerated one.
How to use
Everything here is deliberately current, not the textbook version: the split-brain two-minds claim has been challenged, inattentional blindness turns out to be partly unreported awareness, the Libet readiness potential has a strong stochastic reinterpretation, and the false-memory finding got stronger under preregistered replication. Predicting each result before you read it is the difference between being informed and being caught, and being caught is what makes it stick.
