Name a Business or Product
Generate name candidates across four naming strategies, then score the shortlist on sayability, spelling, collisions, and realistic domains.
Name this: [WHAT IT IS + one sentence on what it does and for whom]
The feeling it should give: [2-3 WORDS, e.g. "trustworthy and fast" / "playful, indie"]
Names I like (and why): [ANCHORS, e.g. "Notion, Linear: short, ordinary words made specific"]
Names I hate: [ANTI-ANCHORS]
ROUND 1: 24 candidates, 6 per strategy, because the strategies fail differently and I shouldn't pick a lane before seeing all four:
- DESCRIPTIVE: says what it does (findable, but generic and hard to trademark).
- SUGGESTIVE/METAPHOR: evokes the outcome or an image (the sweet spot when it works).
- COINED: invented words (ownable everywhere, but needs marketing budget to mean anything).
- REPURPOSED REAL WORD: an ordinary word made specific by context (the Notion/Linear play, strong but collision-prone).
One line of rationale each. No filler to hit the count. If a strategy only yields 4 good ones, give 4.
ROUND 2: score the best 8 in a table:
- RADIO TEST: if I say it aloud once, can someone type it correctly? Creative misspellings (Lyft-isms) fail unless the budget exists to teach the spelling.
- SAY TEST: two syllables or three? Does it verb ("just Slack me")?
- COLLISION CHECK: known negative or awkward meanings in major languages, and famous-brand adjacency that invites confusion or a trademark fight. Flag what you know; label the rest "verify". Do not present this as a cleared search.
- DOMAIN REALITY: exact .com is likely taken for anything good; rate each name's realistic pattern (get-, join-, .io, .app, compound) and how much the compromise hurts.
ROUND 3: the top 3, each with the positioning line the name unlocks ("[Name]: [what it lets you say about yourself]"), so I'm choosing between stories, not just sounds.
Honesty rules: you cannot check live domain availability or trademark databases. Say so, and end with the 15-minute verification checklist (registrar search, USPTO/EUIPO knockout search, app store search, the name + "scam" google). No -ify/-ly/-hub suffixes unless one genuinely beats the alternatives. How to use
Descended from the old 'domain name generator' prompts, rebuilt around the actual failure modes: names that die when spoken aloud, collide with a bigger brand, or need a spelling lesson. The radio test kills more candidates than any other filter. Apply it ruthlessly. Never announce or buy anything on the model's collision check alone; the 15-minute verification checklist at the end is the real gate.
